How to Put on a Condom and Do It Right

Updated: May 28

Condom know-how isn’t always second nature. Maybe you’ve never really thought about it, done it yourself, or maybe it’s been a while since you paid attention to the details.

Either way, this is your no-nonsense, savvy guide to putting on a condom properly. It’s quick, it’s simple, and it’s one of the best ways to protect yourself and your partner while keeping the mood intact.

Step 1: Check the Packet

Before you even open it, take a second to check a few essentials:

  • Expiry Date: Condoms do expire, and old ones are less reliable.

  • Seal Check: Press gently on the packet to feel for the air bubble. If there’s no bubble, or the foil looks damaged, grab a new one.

Condition: No rips, tears, or signs of wear - your condom should be in perfect shape

Step 2: Start Before Things Heat Up

  • Here’s a golden rule: put the condom on before there’s any physical intimate contact. It’s not just for the main event - this step protects you both from the very beginning. It’s a small move that makes a big difference.

Step 3: Open Carefully

Skip the dramatic moves - no sexy teeth tearing, or scissors. Use your fingers to gently tear along the edge of the packet. If you’ve got sharp nails, go easy. The last thing you want is to damage the condom before it even gets used.

Step 4: Check the Roll Direction

This step is crucial: make sure the condom is positioned to roll down smoothly. If it doesn’t unroll easily, it’s upside down. Don’t flip it over - just toss it and start fresh with a new one.

Step 5: Pinch the Tip, Roll It Down

Here’s the technique that gets it right every time:

  • Pinch the Tip: Leave a little room at the end to catch everything. This also avoids trapping air, which can lead to breakage.

  • Place and Roll: Place the condom on the tip and roll it all the way down to the base. Smooth it out as you go for a snug, secure fit.

Step 6: After the Fun

Once the moment’s over, hold the base of the condom on while pulling out. This keeps everything contained. Wrap the condom in tissue and toss it in the trash - flushing isn’t an option here.

Why It Matters

Using a condom properly is one of the easiest ways to take control of your sexual health. Condoms are the most effective form of contraception giving you 98% protection. It’s simple, effective, and smart - and when you know how to do it right, it’s also a total confidence booster.
